Benzene series, namely aromatic organic compounds, is a general term for benzene and its derivatives. It is a common pollutant discharged by human activities. The absolute number of benzene series compounds in the full sense can be as high as tens of millions or more. The compounds mainly include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, trimethylbenzene, styrene, phenol, aniline, chlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, etc. Among them, due to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, Four types of xylene are the representative substances, and some people call it BTEX for short.
At present, benzene series has been identified as a strong carcinogen by the World Health Organization. In addition, some benzene series compounds are volatile and flammable. People who inhale high concentrations of benzene series compounds such as toluene in a short period of time can cause central nervous system anesthesia, dizziness, headache, nausea and fatigue in mild cases, and severe cases can cause Coma resulting in respiratory and circulatory failure and death. Benzene compounds come from a wide range of sources, such as automobile exhaust, organic solvents in building decoration materials, such as paint additives, common adhesives in daily life, wood-based panel furniture, etc., are all pollution sources of benzene compounds. At present, there are two main standards for testing benzene series, “Determination of Benzene in Water Quality by Headspace/Gas Chromatography” (HJ 1067-2019), “Determination of Benzene in Ambient Air by Activated Carbon Adsorption/Carbon Disulfide Desorption-Gas Chromatography” (HJ 584-2010). It is mainly for the determination of 8 kinds of benzene series of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, cumene and styrene in water quality or ambient air and indoor air.
Through experiments, we screened the chromatographic columns suitable for the test of 8 kinds of benzene series
Chromatographic column: WM-PEG 20M (30m0.32mm1.0μm)
Column oven: 80°C (15min)
Split ratio 30:1
Carrier gas pressure: 0.07MPa
Injection volume: 1 μL

Using Welch WM-PEG20M (30m0.32mm1.0μm), measured under suitable conditions, can meet the detection requirements of 8 kinds of benzene series in the national standard.
